Berry n Berry Bakery

If you're doing the shopping at Westfield Helensvale and catch the smell of fresh baking, you've probably found Berry n Berry Bakery. It's a bakery in Helensvale, on the Gold Coast, that bakes daily, and the range is wide: breads of every kind, plenty of cakes, and a pastry cabinet with both sweet and savoury options.

The sourdough gets a lot of love. One local called it among the best they've ever tasted, with the only complaint being that they wish the loaf were bigger so they didn't have to come back every other day. Pies and savoury rolls have their fans too, including a cheese and smoked sausage roll that went down well. The sea salt roll, crisp outside and soft and buttery inside, is a regular favourite, and so is the egg tart, which people rave about. Croissants get plenty of mentions, from the almond one with its filling on top to a flaky, crisp plain version, and there's a taro toast and a walnut scroll for anyone after something less usual. Takeaway is the norm, and they serve coffee too.

Custom cakes are a real strength. Locals talk about birthday cakes with beautiful designs and flavours to match, and one person described a chocolate and salted caramel cake that was light and fluffy, arriving in a ribbon-tied box with a free set of candles. Another says it's the only place they order birthday cakes from now.

Opinion on price is a little split. Some find it on the high side, others say the quality and the staff's friendly welcome make it good value, and prices are clearly labelled either way. We've heard the odd comment that the counter service can feel a bit cold, and one person had a bread roll that wasn't as fresh as hoped, though most people leave happy.
