Editorial Policy

This page sets out how Bakeries Nearby sources business information, writes the prose that appears on each listing page, verifies content, uses AI tools, and handles corrections. It exists so that visitors, listed businesses, and search engines can understand where the content comes from and what its limits are.

Listing inclusion criteria

A business is included in this directory if it meets all of the following:

  • Has an active Google Business Profile or operating website
  • Operates in Australia (verified via its address and a coordinate check against the Australia bounding box)
  • A bread, pie, pastry or donut bakery in Australia that bakes on site, or sells its own baked bread, pies, pastries or donuts over a counter.
  • An active Google Business Profile with a street address.
  • Not marked permanently or temporarily closed.
  • Is not flagged as “permanently closed” on Google
  • Has at least one verifiable contact method (phone, website, or email)

We leave out supermarket, service station and grocer in-store bakery counters, cafes that only resell bought-in baked goods, wholesale-only and online-only bakers, cake and dessert shops, patisseries whose main trade is cakes or desserts, and pet-treat bakeries, equipment suppliers or novelty shops. Businesses outside the Australia bounding box (latitude -44 to -10, longitude 112 to 154) are filtered out. Duplicates by phone number, website, or Google place ID are removed.

Where listing data comes from

Each listing's factual data (name, address, phone, hours, website, Google rating, review count) is sourced from public business profiles, primarily Google Business Profile via a commercial data provider. We do not invent contact details or opening hours.

Where a bakery has its own website, we read its published pages and, where available, its menu or ordering page as input for the listing. Public Google reviews are read the same way to draw out badges and short snippets. See how we use AI for how this feeds the summary.

How prose is written

Each listing page carries a written description of the bakery. Descriptions are drafted using Anthropic's Claude AI. Each prompt is constrained as follows:

  • Source-grounded. The model is given the business's factual data, the text of recent Google reviews, and the website crawl extract, and instructed to ground every specific claim in that data.
  • Australian English. Spelling and idioms are Australian (licence, organisation, colour).
  • No exact decimal ratings or prices in prose. Prose describes a bakery as highly rated rather than quoting its exact decimal rating, and never quotes a business's prices. Check current prices and ratings directly with the bakery or on its Google listing.
  • Banned filler. Phrases that signal generic AI output (“in conclusion,” “comprehensive,” “seamless,” “goes above and beyond,” etc.) are filtered out by post-processing scripts.

Verification and limits

A badge or description claim about a bakery, such as being known for sourdough or pies, is only used when several public reviews of that business say the same thing. See About for how listings are put together.

We use the editorial “we” voice common in directory and review writing; this reflects that the directory has read and synthesised the public review evidence, not that we have personally interviewed each business. We do not claim to have personally inspected each listing's premises or verified specific outcomes. Where a listing's description mentions specific people's names, those names come from the business's own Google reviews or website. If you spot something inaccurate, see the correction process below.

Update frequency

Listings are refreshed periodically, typically every 3 to 6 months, to pick up new reviews, ownership changes, and businesses that have closed. The last full data refresh was on 28 October 2026.

Corrections

If you operate a business listed here and want to correct or update the information, or if you're a customer who's found something inaccurate, please send the correction via the contact form with:

  • The business name and the URL of the listing
  • What needs to change
  • For business owners: a verifiable identifier (email at the business domain, phone match, or business owner verification through Google)

Corrections to factual details (phone, hours, address) are typically applied within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections to the descriptive prose are applied at the next data-refresh cycle unless the correction is urgent or relates to a specific factual error.

Removals

Listed businesses can request removal at any time via the contact form, sent from a verifiable business email or with equivalent identity proof. Removals are typically actioned within 7 days.

Conflicts of interest

Listing in this directory is free. We do not charge any business for inclusion, and we never charge for more favourable coverage: a listing's rating and its review data are driven by public data. On an unclaimed listing the prose is driven by public data (Google rating, review volume and recency); an owner on our paid Basic plan controls their own description. Business owners can report a factual error in their listing at no cost via the contact form.

We do sell sponsored placement. Business owners can subscribe to a paid plan via our plans page, and the Featured and Premium plans place that business in a box headed “Sponsored” that appears above the ordinary results on relevant city pages, and on the homepage. Sponsored placement is labelled as paid placement everywhere it appears.

Apart from those boxes and the green Verified tick (which means the owner subscribes to our Basic plan; it is not a check of licences, insurance or workmanship), nothing on the page is paid for. The ordinary results below them are ordered by rating and review count, identically for every business, and a business that pays us does not move up, down, in or out of that list. If you ever see a paid listing ranked in the ordinary results because it paid, that is a bug and we want to hear about it via the contact form.

This directory is supported by display advertising. We show ads served by third-party ad networks, including Google AdSense; those ads are labelled and selected by the ad network, not by us. The presence of an ad does not mean we endorse the advertiser, and advertising revenue does not influence which businesses are listed, how they are ranked, or what their listing says.
