Danny's Bread

Sourdough is what gets people talking about Danny's Bread, and locals will tell you it's worth going out of your way for. One regular drives across town just for the sourdough, the brioche rolls and the bagels. It's a traditional sourdough and pastry bakery in Teneriffe, Queensland, working with locally-sourced ingredients and old-fashioned baking methods, and the loaves are also stocked at Harris Farm Markets in West End if you can't make it to the shop.

Beyond the bread, the counter covers a lot of ground. Croissants come up often, hazelnut and almond among them, along with bagels, quiche, and weekend specials. We've heard the ham and cheese toastie is a favourite too, loaded properly with cheese and ham rather than a thin slice. Opinions on the almond croissant are a little split, with one visitor finding it more bready than flaky, so it may come down to personal taste.

It's also a proper café. Coffee, breakfast and takeaway are all on offer, and the coffee is a Melbourne roaster's, which people mention happily. There's a small gift section as well. Custom cake orders are available, so if you have an occasion coming up, it's worth asking the bakery about timing. You can eat in or grab something to go, and in-store pick-up is available.

The staff get plenty of warm mentions. Ella and Tee at the counter are named by regulars as friendly and easy to chat to, and Judith is praised for her pastry work. As with any busy bakery, you'll hear the odd grumble, one regular mentioned a change to a favourite caraway loaf and another had a bad day with freshness, but the overall picture is of a place people keep coming back to.

Practical bits: the entrance and seating are wheelchair accessible, there's free street parking and a free car park, and they take cards and mobile payments. They're also LGBTQ+ friendly. Check the hours before you head in, as early mornings are the best time for the full selection of bread and pastries.
