Anyone looking for a proper pie in Old Reynella tends to end up at Bakery 77, and the pie case is where the talk starts. The pepper steak pie gets a lot of love, the cheeseburger pie sells out some days, and the beef, onion and cheese comes out warm with a flaky top and a hefty filling you can actually taste. Sausage rolls and pasties sit alongside them, and we've heard the sausage rolls are dairy free, which is a welcome find for some.

It's a bakery you can eat at or take away from. There's coffee and breakfast, and the sweet side is worth a look too: the banana caramel pies have their own fans, and one local walked out with a stripey donut the size of their face, made on the spot. A Black Forest for a 21st came back fresh-cream light and not sickly sweet, and a last-minute gender reveal cake was handled with real kindness.

The owner is the baker, and locals say he and his wife are the sort of people who remember what you like. Bakery 77 has been trading here since 2007, and there's a bit of history on the wall about the bakery that used to occupy the premises. The staff get plenty of praise for being friendly, and one visitor was handed a free cake for their wait when the tables were full. Prices are another thing people bring up, with a couple of bakes and two coffees coming in at very modest money.
