Scottsdale Bakery

Scottsdale Bakery is a pie-and-pastry stop on the Newnham side of Launceston, and pies are what people tend to talk about first. The word around is that the chunky pepper steak is a decent size with a proper meat-to-gravy balance and a clear peppery bite. Chicken camembert, steak and mushroom, and a curried scallop pie have all earned praise too, and we've heard the pasties get called some of the best going. One local put it simply: the pastry is flaky, crisp and buttery, especially when it's fresh from the oven.

It isn't only a pie shop. You can pick up breakfast and a coffee here, and the cabinet runs to cakes, a vegetarian frittata and the odd sweet treat. One visitor with coeliac and several other intolerances found a pear and ricotta cake they could enjoy, which says something about the range. Sweets are on the lighter side, so it's the savoury side of the counter that does the heavy lifting.

Service gets a lot of warm mentions. People describe the counter staff as friendly and quick to chat, and Katrina gets a specific shout-out. At least one regular stops in on every working day for lunch, a coffee and something sweet, and says the staff remember them. Sauce is free, though you apply it yourself, so check the bag before you leave.

Not everyone leaves happy. Opinion on the sausage rolls is split, with one person finding the filling plain, another unimpressed, and a loaf sold as sourdough didn't convince one buyer. It can also get properly busy at peak times, which slows things down a little. Prices are considered good value, and it's all takeaway, with free street parking out front and card and tap payments accepted.

The shop opens early on weekdays and is closed on weekends, so check the hours before you head in. If you're after a solid pie or pastie in Newnham, this is a fair place to start.
