If you're after an Asian-style bakery in Glen Waverley, Bread King serves freshly-baked East Asian breads, pastries and cakes. It's a bright, clean shop with a tidy glass display, and the range leans firmly into East Asian baking: soft buns, rolls, croissants, danishes and sponge layer cakes, including mango and durian varieties.

The buns are what people tend to talk about. Taro, coconut, blueberry and pineapple buns all get a mention, along with savoury options like hotdog buns and the spring onion pork floss bun. We've heard the bread is soft and fresh from the oven, and that there are a few flavours you won't spot in every bakery, coconut and panda-flavoured breads among them. The pastries look good behind the glass too, especially the croissants and filled breads.

Prices are a regular talking point, and the word is that it's good value for what you get. Staff are described as friendly and polite, and the service gets a thumbs up from people who've dropped in more than once.

A couple of locals have found some fillings a bit light, and one felt a tuna bun was drier than they'd like, so it can be a little hit and miss depending on what you pick. One early-morning visitor also found the selection thinner than expected, so later in the day may give you more to choose from.

Custom cake orders are available, and you can dine in, take away, pick up in store or get it delivered.
