Fermento Bakery

Fermento Bakery is a bakery and cafe in Bowral that people tend to stumble on and then keep coming back to. Locals describe the place as a little calmer than some of the busier spots in town, with a cosy, warm feel and a steady stream of regulars coming and going.

The baked goods are the draw. Pies are a big part of the story here, and the chicken and leek pie gets a mention, along with sausage rolls that one visitor noted had no flour filler. Sourdough and focaccia are also well known, and the focaccia sandwiches are a favourite. We've heard the pulled beef pastry goes fast, and there's a good run of sweet and savoury pastries, quiches and cakes alongside the bread. Things come out fresh from the oven, and the whole spread has a distinctly Italian-style leaning.

It works equally well for a sit-down or a quick stop. You can dine in or take away, and there's coffee, breakfast and sandwiches made to order. One visitor ordered a last-minute batch of sandwiches for a wedding and said it kept the bridal party going. Another went back two days running. Portions are generous, with one local noting the staff happily offered a doggie bag, and the value gets a nod too.

Service comes up again and again. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and one visitor made the trip from Sydney partly because of the gracious service from Lia at the counter. It's the sort of place where people notice repeat locals, which usually says a lot.

Practical bits: it's on Bong Bong Street, and footpath work out the front has made it easy to walk past, so keep an eye out for it. Free street parking is nearby, and they take cards and mobile payments. Lunchtime between noon and one gets busy, so allow a little extra time if you're on a deadline. Opening hours run most of the day, but it's worth checking before you head in.
