The Fabulous Baker Boys Bakery in Pooraka is the sort of place where people settle in for a pie and a coffee, or a full cooked breakfast, rather than just dashing through. Pies are what the bakery is best known for. A board lists varieties to choose from, and the chunky steak, bacon and cheese style gets plenty of love. One local called the pastry flaky and golden with tender steak and no gristly bits, and another said it was the nicest pasty they'd had in thirty-plus years. Sausage rolls, a chilli sausage option and a spread of donuts, including mock cream chocolate ones, sit alongside the pies, and we hear the baked goods are all made in house.

Beyond the counter, it works as a proper cafe. You can dine in, with tables inside and a covered area outside, or take your order away, and they also offer delivery. Breakfast is a regular draw, with generous serves and good value, and the coffee gets a thumbs up, though one person found it a touch weak and now asks for an extra shot. Vegetarians are looked after too, with plenty of meat-free choices alongside the heartier fillings.

The staff are a big part of the reputation. Locals describe them as friendly, polite and quick, and one regular who comes in weekly singles out a woman called Nina for her warm greeting. When a pasty had sold out, the counter staff checked the kitchen on the spot rather than just shrugging, which is the kind of small thing people remember.

Like any busy bakery, it can have its off moments. We've heard of a table mix-up on a busy family occasion and the odd wait at peak times. One person found the pies not to their taste.

They also take custom cake orders. There is a free car park and free street parking, with step-free access from the car park and into the shop. Card and tap payments are accepted. Check the hours before you head over, as they differ a little between weekdays and weekends.
