Daci & Daci Bakers in New Town, Tasmania, is a patisserie-style bakery and cafe that sits at a road junction, so most people walk the last stretch from wherever they've managed to park. The reward is a cabinet with handmade cakes, pastries, artisanal breads and petit gateau sitting alongside savoury breakfast and lunch items and salads.

One local called the rose strawberry cake almost too pretty to eat, and another came back a second time just to work through more of the menu, from the savoury through to the sweet. Cooked breakfasts and a smoked salmon pie have their fans too, and we've heard the coffee is smooth and full-bodied, the kind of cup people stop in for on the way to somewhere else. Staff are friendly and attentive, and Jennifer's warm welcome at the counter has been singled out by one visitor.

It works for a sit-down or a quick stop. You can dine in, with table service, in a stylish room with relaxing music, or take your treats away, which people do before hospital visits. Custom cake orders are also available, so it's worth asking the bakery about timing if you have an occasion coming up. The entrance, seating and toilet are all wheelchair-accessible, which not every cafe can say.

One local found a visit underwhelming and felt the food didn't justify the price, so as with any bakery it comes down to what you order and what you like. Most of what we hear, though, is warm, and people who go once tend to want to try the rest of the cabinet.

Doors open from early morning, seven days a week, with slightly shorter weekend trading, but check the hours before you head in. Parking in the immediate streets is tight, though the Hill Street car park across the road is handy if you're also doing a grocery shop.
