About Silverton Bakery and Cafe
Silverton Bakery and Cafe is the only bakery in Silverton, a small outback town about twenty minutes from Broken Hill, and it does a lot with that position. Everything is made in-house, which is no small thing this far from anywhere, and travellers who make the drive out tend to say it was worth it for the baking alone.
Pies are the main event. We hear the lamb pie gets talked about more than most, and the steak, bacon and cheese version has its fans too, with people singling out the rich beef and gravy filling. Chicken, bacon and corn and a curry chicken pie are also on the cabinet, and one visitor called the plain beef pie generous and among the best they'd had. The sausage rolls, including a spinach and ricotta one, come in for plenty of praise as well.
On the pastry side, the cinnamon scroll is the one people go out of their way for. It's big, not overly sweet, and locals say it often comes out still warm. Apple turnovers, custard tarts and apple crumble round out the sweet end, and the bakery's own line is that it also does bread, tarts, slices and cakes. Vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available, and custom cake orders are taken.
It's a proper cafe too. The coffee is from Seven Mile Roasters, and most visitors rate it highly, though one traveller found it average on their visit. There are also chai teas, milkshakes and hot chocolate. You can dine in, with plenty of bench and seat space inside, or sit outside, where the odd donkey has been known to wander past. Takeaway is easy if you're heading on to the Mad Max museum or the pub next door.
Staff are friendly and quick, and the place is kept spotlessly clean. Prices are fair for the size of what you get. There's free street and car park parking out front, wheelchair-accessible entry and seating, and cards and mobile payments are accepted.
Opening days are limited, with the bakery closed early in the week, so check the hours before you make the trip out.
